About Me 

Gary has been playing, writing and singing since age 9.  He has played with Shades Mountain Air, a Birmingham acoustic-bluegrass band, for over ten years.  They have recorded two CDs, Shades Mountain Air  in 2000 and Sky’s A Clearing in 2004 on which Gary contributed original songs.

 

In 2007, Gary put out his first solo album of all original songs titled permanent world of pretend.  He released Overload of Bad News Blues in 2010. 

He has performed both solo and with the band at a wide variety of venues, including Samford University, opening for the Blackwood Brothers, at Auburn University, Georgetown College (Ky) and in Memphis at the Baptist College of Health Sciences.   He has performed more than 125 times over the past ten years at churches, coffee houses, for the American Gospel Quartet Convention , at the Birmingham Area Music Awards show, and local venues like the Moonlight Music Café and Java & Jams, bluegrass festivals and at the Crawfish Boil.  He and Shades Mountain Air continue to perform widely in many venues.

 

Gary has served as a co-coordinator of the Birmingham Chapter of the NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International), a local songwriters group affiliated with the national organization of songwriters.  He has been a minister for over thirty years and a sought-after conference speaker, retreat leader, entertainer, and is an author and occasional adjunct college professor.  He and his wife, Vickie, have three daughters, two sons-in-law, and a granddaughter,  and have lived in Birmingham since 1993.
